2023 IN REVIEW

Golfer of the Year 2023
Congratulations to Martin Cosgrove who was crowned Golfer of the Year for 2023. Martin with a total score of 100pts edged out gallant runner up Cormac O'Muirithe. Well done to Martin who wins the golfer of the year title for the 3rd year in a row.
Huge thanks to the many many generous sponsors who supported our Golfer of the Year competitions throughout the year. Thanks also to John Hanley for updating the standings after each week, Kevin Donnelly for maintaining the Twos competition and finally competition secretary Peter Mulry for his work throughout the year.

Stroke Player of the Year
Congratulations to Cormac O'Muirithe who was crowned Stroke Player of the Year for 2023. The best 6 gross scores out of 10 qualifying competitions were taken into consideration. Cormac excelled in these competitions and with a total of 439 strokes was a clear winner year and was in a class of his own seeing his handicap drop to +2 in the process, another significant milestone that deserves huge recognition.

Well done to Cormac who wins the Stroke Player title for the third time.

GOTY Twos
The season long twos competition ended in a two way tie. Martin Cosgrove and Cormac Ó Muirithe both had 11 birdies on the Par 3s. The hole by hole breakdown and total are on the twos page at the following link:

Inter-Club
2023 was again a lean year when it came to the inter-club scene for the club. A combination of tough away draws and strong opposition resulted in a limited run in all competitions.

CHRIS TALLOTT - RIP

It is with deep sadness that we report the death of past captain Chris Tallott.

Chris was captain of the club in 2013 and represented the Club in countless Inter-club and Gráinne Uaile competitions. He was a captain’s prize winner in 2003, in the same year as wife Sheila was ladies captain, a proud day for him and all his family.

The club would like to extend sympathy to Chris’ family, to his wife Sheila, son Chris and his daughters, Orla, Gráinne, Mary, Bróna, Emer and sister Maura.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

Funeral Arrangements

Chris's remains will be reposing at his residence in Attycunnane (F26 W5F2), on Friday, 10th of November, from 3pm to 6pm and on Saturday, 11th of November, from 3pm to 6pm. HOLE IN ONE!

Congratulations to Ronan Murray who made a hole in one last Sunday on the 11th hole on the Hackett Course.

It is the 47th hole in one, in competition, since the club moved to Carne in 1992 and the third of the 2023 season.

Well done to Ronan.

GRAINNE UAILE - THIRD LEG

The third and final leg of the Mens Gráinne Uaile competition was held in Mulranny on September 26th last.

We were unable to hold onto our slender lead and Mulranny were crowned champions once again.

It was a fantastic performance from us over the 3 weekends but we just fell short in the end

Final Team results:
Mulranny: 777.5
Achill: 755.5
Belmullet: 752

The wait goes on for us to take the title but 2024 could be the year!!

Tuesday 19th September 2023

GRAINNE UAILE - SECOND LEG

The second leg of the 2023 Grainne Uaile was played last Sunday (Sept 17th) in Achill. The weather gods were shining on us as we were treated to another calm a day in the shadow of Minaun.

The scores reflected the ideal playing conditions and it was Achill who charged up the leaderboard as expected but we maintained our lead over Mulranny, albeit by just a solitary point heading into the final leg next Sunday.

Top performers on the day for Belmullet  was again the pairing of Martin Cosgrove and James Lavelle who had an fantastic score of 45pts.

We travel to Mulranny next Sunday with a narrow lead and with Mulranny being our closest challengers with the benefit of home advantage it will be an uphill challenge to keep in touch. However with some changeable weather predicted it could be a "leveler" so we maintain some hope of winning the Grainne Uaile for the first time since 2011.

The team scores are as follows.. Belmullet 516 / Mulranny 515 / Achill 506.5

Tuesday 12th September 2023

GRAINNE UAILE 2023 - FIRST LEG

The first leg of the 2023 Grainne Uaile was played last Sunday (Sept 10th) in Carne on what everyone agreed was a very well presented course. On the 50th anniversary of the triangular event, the weather gods were shining on us as we were treated to as calm a day on the links as we have had the whole year.

The scores reflected the ideal playing conditions and it was ourselves that have taken a 10 point lead over Mulranny after a suberb team performance.

Top performers on the day was the pairing of Martin Cosgrove and James Lavelle who had an incredible score of 53pts. All the more impressive as this was James' debut representing the club.

Many thanks to Fergus, Gary and all the greenkeeping staff for the conditioning of the course as always. Thanks to Erris Tourism for facilitating us on the day and finally to the staff in the clubhouse where all team members were treated for a tasty meal after the round.

We travel to Keel next Sunday hoping to maintain our lead over Mulranny, who at the moment are our nearest challengers but expect Achill to make a charge back into contention on their home patch.

The team scores are as follows..

2023 ON THE COURSE.......SO FAR

As we approach the end of the summer season and the focus switches from the golfer / stroke player of year competitions to the Grainne Uaile for the next 3 weekends the following is a synopsis of the golfing year thus far.

In the golfer of the year competition Cormac O Muirithe holds a narrow 8 point lead over Martin Cosgrove and the chasing pack. With 9
GOTY competitions left in the season it is all to play for over the coming months:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1G896AlirBXRtIWBX4CESphFX8NvMO5gqE-ZzsIylZcg/edit#gid=0

In the stroke player of the year competition it is Cormac O' Muirithe who will regain the title. With only one stroke player of the year competitions left and a 31 shot lead in the standings Cormac will be crowned in the coming weeks.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YlRCO0GgunIYN7dV4N-zApvmpx5TJw64BAq2TsGCpgI/edit#gid=0

In the twos competition there is a great battle ongoing for the title with 145 twos recorded so far this year. Martin Cosgrove leads the way with 9 but with the chasing pack close behind and 10 competitions left there will be a battle to see who will take the "Twos" title for 2023.  There has been two hole-in-ones recorded so far this year in competition, with Mark Irwin and David Hurst recording aces.

The Inter-club season passed without any success for the club but many thanks to all those who made themselves available for selection and represented the club admirably both home and away.

UPCOMING COURSE CHANGES

As the Golf Club will be aware, the first tee complex works are scheduled to begin on 1st November. The area around the first tees will be considered a work site and for health and safety purposes, there will be no entry allowed to that area by anyone, other than authorised working personnel.

Therefore from 1st November, the Hackett back 9 will be the only 9 holes in play from Monday to Friday, until 25th December. On Saturdays and Sundays, the Hackett 18 will be in play, but routed as per the original Hackett routing (i.e. in reverse of existing routing). The exit from the 18th hole will be roadside only, as the tunnel area by the shop will be out of commission due to the first tee works.

From 26th December to 1st April, the front 9 of the Hackett (original back 9) will be closed to enable pathway works and other restorative works to take place. Therefore the course in play during that period will be the C&A course, for which scorecards are available.

In addition, the putting green will be doubled in size as part of the first tee works, and therefore will be out of commission from 1st November, and unlikely to be back in play until 1st April 2023.

On behalf of the Board of Turasoireacht Iorrais Teo, we apologise for any inconvenience caused by these works, but once complete they will result in a much improved course and experience for both Members and visitors alike.

Monday 7th November 2022

CLUBHOUSE OPENING HOURS WINTER 2022

The Clubhouse will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday only for the week commencing 10th October 2022. Thereafter it will only be open on Saturday and Sundays.

In addition, Erris Tourism have to undertake some essential maintenance works in the kitchen during November, including the replacement of the main extractor hood casing and unit, alongside updating both the ladies and mens' bathroom facilities in the Clubhouse. Therefore they will have to close the Clubhouse completely whilst those works are being undertaken, due to both health and safety and hygiene regulations. It is likely that this will be for a two to three week period, at some point in November. The exact dates of closure will be communicated in due course and ET endeavour to keep the closure to as short a period as possible.

GRAINNE UAILE 2022 - FINAL LEG

The third and final leg of the Mens Gráinne Uaile competition was held yesterday in Carne. Achill were crowned champions once again as they held onto the lead the had established after the second leg last week in Keel.
It was a fantastic performance from us on home soil as we comfortably won the third leg but unfortunately we had slipped too far behind to make any sort of late "charge" at reducing the deficit.

Final Team results:
Achill: 766
Mulranny: 751
Belmullet: 735

Top performers on the day were the Mulranny pairing of Eugene McCormack and Tony McDonnell with 49pts with two of the home pairings taking home 2nd and 3rd prize respectively. Noel Mcloughlin and Mark Irwin in 2nd and the brother duo of Sean and Ronan Gaughan rounding off the prizes.

Many thanks to Fergus, Gary and all the greenstaff for the conditioning of the course as always. Thanks to Erris Tourism for facilitating us on the day and finally to the staff in the clubhouse where all team members were treated for a tasty meal after the round.

Next year marks 50 years since the inaugural playing of the Gráinne Uaile competition in 1973.

The wait goes on for us to take the title but 2023 could be the year!!

Tuesday 20th September 2022

GRAINNE UAILE 2022 - SECOND LEG

The second leg of the 2022 Grainne Uaile was played last Sunday (Sept 18th) in Achill and in similar fashion as last week we had a well presented course with the customary warm welcome from our hosts.

Following the trend of the Grainne Uaile this year, home advantage has been reflected in the scoring. It was the turn of the Achill team who excelled winning the first, second and third prizes on the day and were clear winners in the team event also. We were a distant third but with some strong performances from the team.

The overall competition looks likely to be a shootout between Achill and Mulranny in Belmullet next Sunday but we can only hope to win the home leg to restore some pride.

The team scores are as follows..

The first leg of the 2022 Grainne Uaile was played last Sunday (Sept 11th) in Mulranny on what everyone agreed was a very well presented course with the customary warm welcome from our hosts.

The Mulranny team excelled winning the first, second and third prizes on the day and were clear winners in the team event also.

It's safe to say we have a mountain to climb as we travel to Keel and stare at Slieve Mór and Minaun next Sunday.

The team scores are as follows..

SAFETY ON THE COURSE

With an increasing number of new members and junior members in recent times, now is a good time to remind all members about safety on the course.

This relates to issues from driving buggies safely and at an appropriate speed for the terrain to striking the golf ball and being aware of all things around you.

An inexperienced golfer or golf spectator has no idea that the ball may sometimes come off the hosel of the club, (that's the bit of the shaft that goes down into the Clubface) and shoot almost at 90 degrees right for a right handed player. Other shots may come off the toe or the heel of the Club although the latter usually inflicts pain, only on the perpetrator.

This self-infliction usually only happens once !  unlike the dreaded shank or socket which can appear at any time and always when you don't expect it.

Therefore the only safe place to stand when someone is playing a shot is behind the ball.

And players should always be aware of other golfers playing adjacent or other holes nearby and if you, yourself 'hit a loose one' always always shout 'FORE'.

Let's look at a number of potential danger points at Carne,

On the Hackett course, players playing holes 13 and 15 should leave a bag in the middle of the fairway to inform players teeing off behind them that they have not yet 'moved on' and ring the bell on the former, when they have.

On the Wild Atlantic Dunes , the 11th downwind is a hole that can cause problems and again players teeing off should not do so until they are sure the players in front have moved on.

Sincerest apologies to all those that know what a shank is & what a shank feels like …. and particularly to the repeat offenders.

CLUB OUTING 2021

The annual captains outing took place last weekend from Friday 24th - Sunday 26th September. Captain Séan Gaughan organized a fantastic weekend in the midlands for the 30 or so golfers that made the trip east. The weekend kicked off with a trip to Athlone golf club on Friday before heading on to Tullamore where all were based for the weekend in the Bridgehouse Hotel.

On Saturday, on what was a scorcher of a day for late September,   New Forest Golf Club was the venue for day two of the outing. All members were incredibly impressed by the conditioning of the course and it came as no surprise as one of our own, Donal Shine's son also named Donal is the course superintendent in the New Forest Estate.

Day 3 saw the golfers make the short trip from Tullamore to Esker Hills Golf Club. The home club of Shane Lowry was buzzing with excitement after Shane's exploits on the 18th green in his Ryder Cup match the previous night. After the conclusion of the days play it was Thomas Gruddy who was the winner of the captains outing for 2021, closely followed by Kevin Donnelly in second place with captain Séan taking home the 3rd prize.

See below the group that made the trip and who returned home to Belmullet late Sunday evening with a few sore heads but memories to last a lifetime.

Séan would like to thank all of those who made the trip and also main sponsor, Togher Group Hong Kong for contributing towards the weekend.

GRAINNE UAILE 2021

On Sunday last 5th September, after a years absence, the annual Grainne Uaile competition was contested with our near neighbours Achill and Mulranny. This year it was decided that rather than the traditional format of three consecutive Sundays on each course, it was decided to have it over one day this year and Achill Golf Club were the kind hosts.

Home advantage proved to be the deciding factor as Achill eased to victory on what was a great day for scoring across the links in Keel.

Well done to Peter Mulry and Gerry Lavelle who were the leading pair from Belmullet and Captain Sean thanks all of the team for making the trip up to represent our club. The wait goes on to capture the Grainne Uaile trophy but 2022 may be the lucky year.

IRISH PGA CHAMPIONSHIP 2021

Following recent meetings and discussions with the Irish PGA in regards to arrangements for the hosting of the Irish PGA Championship at Carne from 4th to 7th August 2021, we have been made aware of the exact requirements for the event.

In regards to the event itself the PGA have advised that in the event of delays or postponements to play resulting from inclement weather, there may be a requirement to play the final round of the event on Sunday 8th August 2021, and in the unlikely event of this occurring, Member tee times on that Sunday 8th August, would be postponed to start from 12.00 noon onwards.

Should anyone wish to become involved in the event itself, there are a number of opportunities for volunteers in the following roles:-
  • Ball Spotters;
  • Management of the practice range facilities;
  • Starters for both Pro-Am and the Championship;
  • Attendant for the 9th green to feedback scores from the score recorder to the main scoreboard;
  • Attendants to carry scoreboards on the final day for the leading players of the tournament.
If anyone is interested in any of the above, please let the golf shop know by 24th July, so arrangements can be finalized.

BERNIE MCANDREW LADY CAPTAIN 2004 AND 2020

It was with profound sadness and deep deep shock that we heard the news this morning of the passing of last year's Lady Captain Bernie McAndrew.

A quiet lady ,full of discretion and integrity Bernie served as Lady Captain in 2004 and again last year,2020.

She was a great Club representative, having served in many roles in the Ladies Club throughout the years.

She will be missed by so many people, particularly by her husband Ian, her own family, her in-laws and by her wide circle of work and golfing friends.

The whole community has been rocked by the news of her death.

Shown are a sample of 'happy occasions' in the Golf Club that she so enjoyed, whether accepting prizes or giving them out.

MENS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING POSTPONED

This years AGM of the Mens Club which was to  take place in the Elly Bay Suite in the  Broadhaven Bay Hotel at 8 pm on Monday 21st Decembermhas been postponed in light of the restrictions on organised events in indoor settings.

With the likelihood of the restrictions remaining in place or strengthening even further it is more likely that the AGM will be held in a 'remote 'manner to adopt the minutes of the 2019 AGM, adopt the 2020 financial report and ratify the incoming Officers and committee.

News of the new date for the AGM will be posted here and a message sent out on the Whattsapp group.

Sunday 20th December 2020

OUTSTANDING PRIZES WILL BE PRESENTED

The outgoing Prizes Committee would like to inform  members of the Mens Club who are due prizes for competitions from Dec 23rd 2019 to Dec 5th 2020 that they will receive them in due course.

The Prizes Committee intend to meet all prizewinners at Carne over the course of the Christmas period.

As you can appreciate in this extraordinary year, with no prizegivings taking place and the difficulty in approaching sponsors, it has been very difficult to keep up to date with the allocation of prizes.

The outgoing Prizes Committee wish to thank you for your patience and wish the incoming Committee the best of luck in the year ahead.

WINTER RULES IN OPERATION

From today December 4th Winter Rules have been introduced, until further notice.

Play for the Men from now until the 2021 Captain's Drive-In at the earliest, will be from the Yellow tees.

All competitions under these rules (as set out below) are qualifying.

1) A ball lying on a closely-mown area through the green may be lifted without penalty and cleaned. Before lifting the ball, the player must mark its position. Having lifted the ball he/she must place it on a spot within six inches of where the ball originally lay.

A player may place his ball only once, and it is in play when it has come to rest on the spot on which it is placed.

If a player fails to mark the position of the ball before it is lifted,he/she incurs a penalty of one stroke .

Please note that Preferred lies do not apply in the rough.

There has been an unavoidable delay in the delivery of our Handicap System upgrade for the new WHS, so if playing tomorrow follow the instructions at the computer sign-in.

Monday 30th November 2020

CARNE RE-OPENS FOR PLAY TOMORROW TUESDAY

As the country exits Level 5 restrictions tonight at midnight, the Links at Carne will re-open tomorrow December 1st for golf.

All members must abide by the Covid 19 protocols and pre-book their tee times on the BRS system, with the full names of all golfers provided for each tee time.  This is essential for contact tracing purposes and is subject to inspection by the HSA at any time, so it is imperative that members abide by these procedures.

The  newly refurbished Men's changing room facilities will remain closed in line with the Government restrictions until further notice.

In addition, the Clubhouse facilities will re-open on Saturday 5th December, under the normal winter trading hours.

From Wednesday 16th December, the Clubhouse will revert to 7 days per week trading until the New Year, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day excepted.

Please note that the regulations state that a substantial meal must be served before alcohol can be sold to individuals. Maximum of 50 patrons indoors at any one time, social distancing to be observed at all times, and booking is advisable during busy periods.

For those of you who are eligible to attend , the AGM of the Men's Club will be held on Friday December 18th at 8pm.  As the Clubhouse restaurant will no doubt be busy ,a venue for the AGM has yet to be confirmed.

An update will be posted  here in good time.

After thirty plus years on the Men's Golf Club committee I am taking a well deserved break from Club activities in 2021.

Best of luck to my successor as the P.R.O  ,  Noel McLoughlin who will keep you all informed of all things to do with the Club via this website , the Club Facebook page and the Club Whattsapp group.

And best of luck to the incoming President, Captains, Officers and Committees.

Signing off

Kevin D

The status of the course(s) at Carne continue to rise according to the latest rankings in Links magazine which has us at No 8 in the Republic of Ireland and No 1 in Connacht.

Congratulations to all involved particularly the greenkeeping staff of Fergus and Gary who have the course in great shape.

That said, the fairways on the links do need some attention in the next week due to the increased traffic on it over the last number of weeks and to that end the Club are asking all who are fit and able and in the locality to help out with a redivotting evening on Monday next at 6:30 pm.

If you can help out please do, 'many hands make light work'

It is so important to present the course in the best possible way particularly over the next few months when there is so much golf, competitive and otherwise taking place.

Unfortunately we don't have the luxury (at present) of tens of staff, as in the picture, to undertake routine maintenance of this nature on a regular basis so it's imperative that Club members give a hand on the one or two occasions annually that it is required

All help is greatly appreciated.

Congrats to Ronnie

Congratulations go to Ronnie McDonnell on his ace at the Hackett 5th hole on Sunday last.

This was the first ace at this hole since the two nines on the Hackett course were reversed.

He is pictured alongside his playing partners on the day, Michael Gaughan, Seán Gaughan and David S Gaughan.

Thanks to Ronnie for opening a tab in the Clubhouse for a few hours so that anyone that wanted a drink could have one with their meal
