The annual captains outing took place last weekend from Friday 22nd - Sunday 24th April. Captain Declan Healy organized a fantastic weekend for the 40 or so golfers that made the trip.
The weekend kicked off with a trip to Roscommon Golf Club on Friday before heading on to Athlone where all were based for the weekend in the Hodson Bay Hotel, playing the nearby Athlone Golf Club on both Saturday & Sunday.
After the conclusion of the both days play it was Damien Murphy who was the winner of the captains outing for 2022 after two consistent days across the fairways. All the members were impressed with the conditioning of both two golf courses as well as the hotel hospitality where everyone was fed and watered well for the three days .
See below the group that made the trip (missing Brendan Gaughan) and who returned home to Belmullet late Sunday evening with a few sore heads but memories to last. Declan would like to thank all of those who made the trip and also main sponsor, Hastings Insurance for contributing towards the weekend.
There will be a presentation of prizes at 3.30pm on Sunday 10th April 2022 in the clubhouse.
The presentation will include all prizes from competitions played from October 25th 2021 up to and including last Sunday.
All prize winners are asked to make an effort to be present to collect their prizes as a sign of gratitude and appreciation towards the amazing sponsors we have in this club.
It is with great sadness that we hear of the passing of our former captain Michael Mangan. Micheal served as captain in 1995 and is fondly remembered among club members. He was the immensely proud Captain when the Club won it's first ever County Cup in that year.
He was one of the founding members of Erris Tourism and was instrumental in the acquisiation of the land for our 27 hole links as it is today.
Belmullet Golf Club would like to extend their condolences to all of Michael's family, neighbours and close friends on his passing.
A guard of honour by club members will take place. Those who are available please gather at 11.30am at the old post office. Please wear your club jacket / colours as a mark of respect.

Here’s to a successful year for the Club both on and off the course!
With an increasing number of new members and junior members in recent times, now is a good time to remind all members about safety on the course.
This relates to issues from driving buggies safely and at an appropriate speed for the terrain to striking the golf ball and being aware of all things around you.
An inexperienced golfer or golf spectator has no idea that the ball may sometimes come off the hosel of the club, (that's the bit of the shaft that goes down into the Clubface) and shoot almost at 90 degrees right for a right handed player. Other shots may come off the toe or the heel of the Club although the latter usually inflicts pain, only on the perpetrator.
This self-infliction usually only happens once ! unlike the dreaded shank or socket which can appear at any time and always when you don't expect it.
Therefore the only safe place to stand when someone is playing a shot is behind the ball.
And players should always be aware of other golfers playing adjacent or other holes nearby and if you, yourself 'hit a loose one' always always shout 'FORE'.
Let's look at a number of potential danger points at Carne,
On the Hackett course, players playing holes 13 and 15 should leave a bag in the middle of the fairway to inform players teeing off behind them that they have not yet 'moved on' and ring the bell on the former, when they have.
On the Wild Atlantic Dunes , the 11th downwind is a hole that can cause problems and again players teeing off should not do so until they are sure the players in front have moved on.
Sincerest apologies to all those that know what a shank is & what a shank feels like …. and particularly to the repeat offenders.
Mens 2022 fixture calendar is now available to view under "Mens Club" tab: https://belmulletgolfclub.ie/mens-club/mens-fixtures-2022

The annual captains outing took place last weekend from Friday 24th - Sunday 26th September. Captain Séan Gaughan organized a fantastic weekend in the midlands for the 30 or so golfers that made the trip east. The weekend kicked off with a trip to Athlone golf club on Friday before heading on to Tullamore where all were based for the weekend in the Bridgehouse Hotel.
On Saturday, on what was a scorcher of a day for late September, New Forest Golf Club was the venue for day two of the outing. All members were incredibly impressed by the conditioning of the course and it came as no surprise as one of our own, Donal Shine's son also named Donal is the course superintendent in the New Forest Estate.
Day 3 saw the golfers make the short trip from Tullamore to Esker Hills Golf Club. The home club of Shane Lowry was buzzing with excitement after Shane's exploits on the 18th green in his Ryder Cup match the previous night. After the conclusion of the days play it was Thomas Gruddy who was the winner of the captains outing for 2021, closely followed by Kevin Donnelly in second place with captain Séan taking home the 3rd prize.
See below the group that made the trip and who returned home to Belmullet late Sunday evening with a few sore heads but memories to last a lifetime.
Séan would like to thank all of those who made the trip and also main sponsor, Togher Group Hong Kong for contributing towards the weekend.
Our annual fundraising Am Am is back on October Bank Holiday weekend ( Sat & Sun 23rd & 24th October). We expect that there will be a big demand for slots as it is a bank holiday so it is important that you book your team as early as possible to not be dissapointed. Call the golf shop or drop in to book your tee time. Best score on either day, €35pp for one day or €50pp for both days. Excellent prizes guaranteed.
On Sunday last 5th September, after a years absence, the annual Grainne Uaile competition was contested with our near neighbours Achill and Mulranny. This year it was decided that rather than the traditional format of three consecutive Sundays on each course, it was decided to have it over one day this year and Achill Golf Club were the kind hosts.
Home advantage proved to be the deciding factor as Achill eased to victory on what was a great day for scoring across the links in Keel.
Well done to Peter Mulry and Gerry Lavelle who were the leading pair from Belmullet and Captain Sean thanks all of the team for making the trip up to represent our club. The wait goes on to capture the Grainne Uaile trophy but 2022 may be the lucky year.
Michael Madden (Captain, Mulranny), John McNamara (Captain Achill), Séan Gaughan (Captain, Belmullet)
The gents Artec Construction sponsored competition due to take place on the August 19th 2021 has been changed to August 18th 2021 due to a clash with another event being played across the dunes on Thursday and Friday.
As our Thursday evening competitions are drawing to a close as the evenings are getting shorter, we encourage all our members to come out and support.
There will be a redivotting evening tomorrow (July 30th) from 6pm to repair some of fresh divots and return the fairways to their best on the Wild Atlantic Dunes course in advance of the IPGA next week and upcoming club competitions. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone that can, could help out for a couple of hours. The greenkeeper will have the material ready and it is hoped there will be plenty of bags and buckets and a few buggies to carry out the operation.
As always members are reminded to continually repair divots and pitchmarks on greens.

BERNIE MCANDREW LADY CAPTAIN 2004 AND 2020
It was with profound sadness and deep deep shock that we heard the news this morning of the passing of last year's Lady Captain Bernie McAndrew.
A quiet lady ,full of discretion and integrity Bernie served as Lady Captain in 2004 and again last year,2020.
She was a great Club representative, having served in many roles in the Ladies Club throughout the years.
She will be missed by so many people, particularly by her husband Ian, her own family, her in-laws and by her wide circle of work and golfing friends.
The whole community has been rocked by the news of her death.
Shown are a sample of 'happy occasions' in the Golf Club that she so enjoyed, whether accepting prizes or giving them out.
This years AGM of the Mens Club which was to take place in the Elly Bay Suite in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel at 8 pm on Monday 21st Decembermhas been postponed in light of the restrictions on organised events in indoor settings.
With the likelihood of the restrictions remaining in place or strengthening even further it is more likely that the AGM will be held in a 'remote 'manner to adopt the minutes of the 2019 AGM, adopt the 2020 financial report and ratify the incoming Officers and committee.
News of the new date for the AGM will be posted here and a message sent out on the Whattsapp group.
The outgoing Prizes Committee would like to inform members of the Mens Club who are due prizes for competitions from Dec 23rd 2019 to Dec 5th 2020 that they will receive them in due course.
The Prizes Committee intend to meet all prizewinners at Carne over the course of the Christmas period.
As you can appreciate in this extraordinary year, with no prizegivings taking place and the difficulty in approaching sponsors, it has been very difficult to keep up to date with the allocation of prizes.
The outgoing Prizes Committee wish to thank you for your patience and wish the incoming Committee the best of luck in the year ahead.
From today December 4th Winter Rules have been introduced, until further notice.
Play for the Men from now until the 2021 Captain's Drive-In at the earliest, will be from the Yellow tees.
All competitions under these rules (as set out below) are qualifying.
1) A ball lying on a closely-mown area through the green may be lifted without penalty and cleaned. Before lifting the ball, the player must mark its position. Having lifted the ball he/she must place it on a spot within six inches of where the ball originally lay.
A player may place his ball only once, and it is in play when it has come to rest on the spot on which it is placed.
If a player fails to mark the position of the ball before it is lifted,he/she incurs a penalty of one stroke .
Please note that Preferred lies do not apply in the rough.
There has been an unavoidable delay in the delivery of our Handicap System upgrade for the new WHS, so if playing tomorrow follow the instructions at the computer sign-in.
CARNE RE-OPENS FOR PLAY TOMORROW TUESDAY
As the country exits Level 5 restrictions tonight at midnight, the Links at Carne will re-open tomorrow December 1st for golf.
All members must abide by the Covid 19 protocols and pre-book their tee times on the BRS system, with the full names of all golfers provided for each tee time. This is essential for contact tracing purposes and is subject to inspection by the HSA at any time, so it is imperative that members abide by these procedures.
The newly refurbished Men's changing room facilities will remain closed in line with the Government restrictions until further notice.
In addition, the Clubhouse facilities will re-open on Saturday 5th December, under the normal winter trading hours.
From Wednesday 16th December, the Clubhouse will revert to 7 days per week trading until the New Year, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day excepted.
Please note that the regulations state that a substantial meal must be served before alcohol can be sold to individuals. Maximum of 50 patrons indoors at any one time, social distancing to be observed at all times, and booking is advisable during busy periods.
For those of you who are eligible to attend , the AGM of the Men's Club will be held on Friday December 18th at 8pm. As the Clubhouse restaurant will no doubt be busy ,a venue for the AGM has yet to be confirmed.
An update will be posted here in good time.
After thirty plus years on the Men's Golf Club committee I am taking a well deserved break from Club activities in 2021.
Best of luck to my successor as the P.R.O , Noel McLoughlin who will keep you all informed of all things to do with the Club via this website , the Club Facebook page and the Club Whattsapp group.
And best of luck to the incoming President, Captains, Officers and Committees.
Signing off
Kevin D

The Friends of Carne 36 hole competition takes place this Saturday and Sunday.
There are now a number of teetimes available due to the reduced number of teams from Dublin as they abide by the restrictions on the county.

MENS GRÁINNE UAILE CANCELLED

Hopefully it will be held in it's usual three day format in 2021.
As a result the Swanick Family Practice sponsored Men's competition will now be held on Sunday 20th September.

Firstly, just to advise that in line with Government Covid regulations, the wearing of face masks in retail settings is mandatory from tomorrow 10th August until further notice. Having checked with the HSA, they have confirmed that the Golf Shop is considered a retail outlet and therefore anyone entering is required to wear a face mask. Face masks will be available to purchase in the golf shop from Wednesday onwards, as we are currently awaiting further supplies.
Thanks to all those who showed up for the Guard of Honour earlier today, the turnout was a very impressive one to bid farewell to our Past Captain Michael.
If you can help out tomorrow evening for fairway redivotting, please gather at 630 hopefully we can complete the work on the Hackett course on the day.
The mixed scramble scheduled for Wednesday next will be rescheduled as many members will be helping out on the course tomorrow, the Ladies have a competition on Tuesday kindly sponsored by The Western Strands Hotel and the men have one on Thursday kindly sponsored by Teach John Joe ahead of the Pro-Am next weekend.
It is with deep sadness that we report the death of former long time member, Past Captain ,Past President and Honorary Life member of the Club Michael Kavanagh.
Michael was Captain of the Club in 1968 and represented the Club in countless Inter Club and Gráinne Uaile competitions.
The Club would like to extend sympathy to Michael's family , to his wife Gemma, sons Seán,Brendan and Tom and his daughters Mary, Michelle, Aisling and Gemma and to his sister Mary.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.
As a result of Michael's interment tomorrow Sunday, the Marty Gaughan Memorial Men's Competition scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed until a later date.
The course will remain closed to members tomorrow until after Michael's burial in Emlybeg cemetery.
A Guard of Honour of Golf Club members should gather at the bottom of the road up to Emlybeg graveyard from 1130.
Please wear a Club Jacket or Club Jumper if you have one.
Michael is pictured holding the Ryder Cup on it's visit to Carne in 2014 and below on the old Hackett First tee with his Met Éireann colleagues Kevin Donnelly, Donal Shine and John Hanley back in 1992.
Congrats go to John Ginnelly who recorded an ace on the Hackett 7th (old 16th) in yesterday's strokeplay competition kindly sponsored by PJ McHale.
This is the 43rd ace recorded in competition at Carne.
Pictured are Ciarán Rabbett, John Ginnelly and David Barrett......and Brendan Reilly for Ciarán in the latter.
The status of the course(s) at Carne continue to rise according to the latest rankings in Links magazine which has us at No 8 in the Republic of Ireland and No 1 in Connacht.
Congratulations to all involved particularly the greenkeeping staff of Fergus and Gary who have the course in great shape.
That said, the fairways on the links do need some attention in the next week due to the increased traffic on it over the last number of weeks and to that end the Club are asking all who are fit and able and in the locality to help out with a redivotting evening on Monday next at 6:30 pm.
If you can help out please do, 'many hands make light work'
It is so important to present the course in the best possible way particularly over the next few months when there is so much golf, competitive and otherwise taking place.
Unfortunately we don't have the luxury (at present) of tens of staff, as in the picture, to undertake routine maintenance of this nature on a regular basis so it's imperative that Club members give a hand on the one or two occasions annually that it is required
All help is greatly appreciated.
Congratulations go to Ronnie McDonnell on his ace at the Hackett 5th hole on Sunday last.
This was the first ace at this hole since the two nines on the Hackett course were reversed.
He is pictured alongside his playing partners on the day, Michael Gaughan, Seán Gaughan and David S Gaughan.
Thanks to Ronnie for opening a tab in the Clubhouse for a few hours so that anyone that wanted a drink could have one with their meal
